About BIMCO summer shipping school
Since 2002, over 800 participants have participated in this full, highly intensive, crash course in all shipping-related matters we can possibly cover in one week. The course is a unique blend of basic principles on bills of lading, voyage and time chartering, laytime and demurrage, mixed with practical examples and case studies on LOI’s, co-mingling of cargoes, and the effects of piracy on shipping contracts, just to mention some of the topics covered!
The backbone of the programme is the case studies, where participants are divided into groups to find practical solutions to realistic situations presented. As in real life, there is rarely one fixed answer to a situation and the discussions between the groups and tutors form an important part of the learning objectives.
On the last day, everyone joins together in a full day exercise “The Big Fixing Game” where the participants compete to fix ships and cargoes using all the knowledge they have gained over the previous days to get the best commercial results.
Several unique events, including specially organised dinners, a visit to the Danish Maritime Museum, a visit to a local ship broker for a presentation on brokering, bridge simulators at Force Technology, and a Copenhagen boat tour including the port are also included in the programme.
The BIMCO summer shipping school is residential and the participants stay at the conference hotel for the duration of the course. The “boot camp” atmosphere is a very important part of the programme. The fee includes accommodation from Sunday 16 June (check in from 14.00) to Saturday 22 June 2019 (check out before 12) (6 nights), Coffee breaks, lunches, participants’ dinners (except Wednesday evening) and excursions (as listed in the programme).
What people say about the BIMCO summer shipping school
Sometimes it is really difficult to express what you think with words. The only thing I can say is that summer shipping school was an amazing experience and the perfect combination of education and fun. Thank you so much for this great experience!
...strange becoming so close to the other participants within such a short timeframe. On the other hand, the location of the hotel ensured that everyone remained in the same place, which I am sure increased the level of learning
To summarise, I have to say I had an amazing week with wonderful people and it was both educational and great fun!
...In particular, I liked the various case-studies and feel I gained a lot of knowledge through these. “I had a great time and learned a lot during the week. The speakers were knowledgeable and were sincerely interested in their fields. I truly feel it has been an educational week, also very interesting taking part in what occurs in other niche markets besides the one I function in.
This course was, although intense, extremely informative and useful both directly for my work, as well as indirectly to provide more insight into the industry and different aspects of it.
