Elli Aidini

Elli has practised in both common law and civil law jurisdictions, having lived and worked in the UK, Netherlands and Greece. She is a qualified solicitor in England and Wales and an Attorney at Law in Greece. She has experience with High Court disputes and arbitration (LMAA, LCIA and ICC) and works on a wide range of wet and dry shipping matters, including salvage and wreck removal, offshore decommissioning projects, speed and performance claims, charterparty, and ship management agreement disputes. Previously, Elli worked in the legal department of an international company specialising in salvage and decommissioning services.

Documentary Committee adopts string of important contracts and clauses

When BIMCO’s Documentary Committee (DC) met on 11 October in Copenhagen, it approved two new clauses and two revised versions of existing contracts. The new standards are being finalised for publication and will soon be made available for use on SmartCon and on the BIMCO website accompanied by explanatory notes.

Hire and termination clauses reviewed in BARECON update

At the most recent International Oil Pollution Compensation (IOPC) Funds meeting in London, Ban Ki-moon, former United Nations Secretary-General, spoke to representatives, IMO staff and the Funds’ Secretariat about the value of shipping to international trade, climate change and encouraging and empowering women to play a greater role in shipping.

Paul has spent 14 years working in shipping and Admiralty matters. Prior to this Paul was at sea for 16 years with the last 9 years in the offshore sector, including taking command roles in DP classed vessels. Paul qualified as a solicitor in 2009 and advised on LOF and common law salvages around the UK as well as contractual disputes under the various towage contracts such as the UKSCT, TOWCON and TOWHIRE and equally SUPPLYTIME. He has regularly advised on the drafting and implementation of wreck removal contracts, acting for contractors as well as Clubs. He also gives seminars to clients on the various BIMCO and ISU contracts to assist them in choosing the most appropriate contract for their particular circumstances. Paul has recently been elected as the Secretary to the Admiralty Solicitors Group (ASG). The ASG is comprised of established maritime legal firms and was formed in 1972 to promote and preserve standards in the practice of maritime law in England. The ASG meets regularly to discuss recent issues and maritime practice.

Simon Tatham

Simon is senior partner of Tatham & Co, a specialist shipping law firm based in the City of London. A particular focus of his practice relates to casualty work, otherwise known as Admiralty or “wet” law, typically handling incidents arising from salvage, collision, strandings, engine breakdowns and fires along with the related insurance and contractual issues that arise. He advises towage, salvage, wreck removal, heavy lift, barge and OSV operators, as well as their insurers and hirers, on contract selection, negotiation, and disputes. Simon speaks at many industry events and is a frequent commentor on the practical side of legal developments in trade periodicals including International Tug & Salvage. Simon and his team of specialists, including a former Lloyd’s Arbitrator QC, Master Mariners and former in- house counsel of a leading international tug and salvage company have recently advised on the salvage of a vessel in the Suez Canal, have concluded a High Court test case concerning sovereign rights to treasure salvage and litigation relating to the capsize of a tug with all hands off Africa.
