BIMCO publishes the Russian Oil Price Cap Scheme Clause 2023

The clause provides a standardised framework for charterers and owners to agree on and include in their charter parties. It addresses compliance with the regulation of Russian oil and petroleum products following the EU/G7 measures, which implemented an oil price cap on specific oil products originating from or exported by Russia. BIMCO has developed a comprehensive and adaptable clause that caters to the needs of various industry stakeholders, promoting responsible shipping practices and ensuring compliance with the evolving regulatory landscape.

MEPC 81 adopts and approves a raft of measures to protect the marine environment

The IMO’s Marine Environmental Protection Committee at its 81st Session adopted amendments to mandatory instruments and approved a series of measures in order to protect the marine environment- from emission control areas in Canada and Norway through to electronic ballast water record books. Underwater radiated noise from ships - IMO guidelines revised

Focus on underwater radiated noise from shipping has grown significantly over the past few years. Consequently, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) has decided to raise awareness of the subject by issuing updated non-mandatory guidelines with the aim of monitoring the impact and thus ascertaining the efficacy of various mitigation solutions.

Industry publishes improved cyber guidelines

The third edition of the industry cyber risk management guidelines, Guidelines on Cyber Security Onboard Ships, addresses the requirement to incorporate cyber risks in the ship’s safety management system (SMS). It also reflects a deeper experience with risk assessments of operational technology (OT) - such as navigational systems and engine controls - and provides more guidance for dealing with the cyber risks to the ship arising from parties in the supply chain.

Progress made on ballast water matters by MEPC 81

MEPC 81 addressed ballast water management for ships while operating in challenging water quality, and temporary storage of treated sewage and/or grey water in ballast water tanks. The recent meeting of the IMO’s Marine Environmental Protection Committee (81st Session) made significant progress on the application of the BWM Convention to ships operating in challenging water quality conditions, and on temporary storage of treated sewage and/or grey water in ballast water tanks – with guidance adopted on both issues.

Q&A with Nick Fell, Chairperson of BIMCO’s Documentary Committee
