IMO to start comprehensive review of STCW Convention and Code

In an effort to keep seafarer training, certification and watchkeeping aspects in line with developments in the shipping industry, and to address several challenges faced by seafarers, the Maritime Safety Committee (MSC) of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) has agreed to start a comprehensive review and revision of the STCW Convention and Code. The work is expected to begin at the HTW sub-committee next year.

New BIMCO/ICS Seafarer Workforce Report warns of serious potential officer shortage

Launched today, the new Seafarer Workforce Report from BIMCO and the International Chamber of Shipping warns that the industry must significantly increase training and recruitment levels if it is to avoid a serious shortage in the total supply of officers by 2026. Given the growing demand for STCW certified officers, the Report predicts that there will be a need for an additional 89,510 officers by 2026 to operate the world merchant fleet. The report estimates that 1.89 million seafarers currently serve the world merchant fleet, operating over 74,000 vessels around the globe.

Her responsibilities include the implementation of BIMCO’s training courses online and worldwide, the publication of courses, maintenance of the Training webpages and providing customer support. Prior to joining the BIMCO Training team in May 2023, Tracy has been working for a SaaS Company in Revenue Operations and was responsible for contacts and administration of commissions globally. Tracy holds a MSc in Business Administration and Economics from Southern Denmark University.
