On 4 June BIMCO, together with ICS, IMCA, ITF and OCIMF, had arranged a symposium about piracy in the Gulf of Guinea. The symposium came to the conclusion that the Nigerian piracy problem occurs in a small area and can be solved if Nigeria wants it.
The Government of Nigeria and shipping stakeholders launch a strategy to end piracy and armed robbery in the Gulf of Guinea (GoG). Despite a 60 percent decline in piracy-related attacks, following increased counter-piracy efforts, all reported crew kidnappings in 2021 were reported in the GoG. The strategy establishes a mechanism to improve and reinforce best counter-piracy practices by both local and global actors.
Steadily increasing support for the Gulf of Guinea Declaration on Suppression of Piracy, combined with Nigeria announcing significant investment to address the ongoing piracy issue in the Gulf of Guinea, raises hope that efforts are on the right track to end piracy in the region and increase safety for seafarers.
In response to growing concerns about piracy and armed robbery in the Gulf of Guinea, BIMCO is working closely with the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) and Stable Seas, an international non-governmental organisation, to calculate the costs of maritime piracy and armed robbery in the Gulf of Guinea to West and Central African nations.
The latest edition of this clause is the Piracy Clause for Time Charter Parties 2013 .
