Netherlands, Vlaardingen - Vessel Traffic Separation

27 February 2018

With the completion of the VTS system and the related Data Handling System, the Port Management now has one of the world's most advanced safety systems for the control of shipping. However, it is always open to improvement. The Vessel Traffic Management System (VTMS) is in operation for the approaches to Europoort and the New Waterway; it covers an area from 45 miles West of Noorderhoofd up to 2 miles East of the van Brienenoord Bridge and 4 miles East of the Spijkenisse Bridge in the Oude Maas river, including all adjacent harbour basins. The area is divided into three regions, each having its own Traffic Centre to communicate with the shipping (VHF 13). The three regions are sub-divided into 12 sectors, each having a traffic attendant and a seperate VHF-channel.
