BIMCO and FONASBA launch new general agency agreement

BIMCO and FONASBA, the worldwide organisation representing shipbrokers and ship agents, have once again joined forces to create and launch a new general agency agreement for port agents, shipowners and ship operators contracting port agency services.

Toby is HFW’s Singapore Head of Shipping and APAC Head of our global Crisis Management team. Toby’s work involves managing major marine and energy disasters, which are often complex, involving a number of interrelated actions in a number of jurisdictions. He is also recognised for insurance coverage and other marine and energy related commercial and contractual disputes. Toby has practical experience of working as a marine surveyor in Houston. He has also acted as head of the legal team at a leading Lloyd’s syndicate dealing with marine, energy and war risks. Toby is qualified in England and Wales and joined HFW as a solicitor in 2001. He became a Partner in 2007 and relocated from our London office to Singapore in 2017.

BIMCO submits biofouling survey results to the IMO

BIMCO has forwarded the results of a biofouling survey to the International Maritime Organization (IMO) to contribute with insight into biofouling practices ahead of the IMO’s revision of the existing guidelines for ships’ biofouling.

Nigeria and shipping industry launch strategy to eliminate piracy threat in Gulf of Guinea

The Government of Nigeria and shipping stakeholders launch a strategy to end piracy and armed robbery in the Gulf of Guinea (GoG). Despite a 60 percent decline in piracy-related attacks, following increased counter-piracy efforts, all reported crew kidnappings in 2021 were reported in the GoG. The strategy establishes a mechanism to improve and reinforce best counter-piracy practices by both local and global actors.

Christian is BIMCO’s General Counsel. He is a lawyer and graduated from the University of Copenhagen with a Master’s degree in 2001 and an LL.M. with Distinction from the University of Southampton in 2004. He worked at the Danish Maritime Authority from 2001 until joining the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Maritime Transport and Energy in 2005. Christian has been with BIMCO since 2009, providing legal and policy advice inhouse and to members, representing the association at various international meetings and managing a number of contracts and clauses related projects. Christian was seconded to Danish law firm Gorrissen Federspiel from 2017 to 2018 and was admitted to the Danish Bar in February 2019 (practice certificate deposited). From 2022 to 2023, he worked out of BIMCO’s Singapore office whilst being part-time seconded to BW Group.
