The Maritime Labour Convention, 2006 (MLC, 2006) is an international labour convention adopted under the scope of the International Labour Organization (ILO) in February 2006 and contains a set of global standards bringing nearly all the existing maritime labour instruments together in a single reformatted Convention.

The Legal Committee of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) has agreed on a new item for its future work programme relating to fair treatment of seafarers detained on suspicion of committing maritime crimes. At the Committee’s meeting on 27 November and 1-2 December, it also agreed on the development of guidelines for flag and port state authorities regarding how to deal with seafarer abandonment cases.

The Australia Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) updates the temporary arrangements during COVID-19 relating to the maximum period of shipboard service allowed for seafarers under the Maritime Labour Convention, 2006 (MLC,2006).

The third set of amendments made to the Maritime Labour Convention, 2006 as amended (MLC, 2006) relates to tackling important issues such as seafarers' employment agreements (SEA), wages and repatriation process when a seafarer is held captive on or off a ship as a result of acts of piracy or armed robbery against ships.
