Iron ore fines, if not carried safely under the requirements of the International Maritime Solid Bulk Cargoes ( IMSBC) Code, can be extremely problematic due to its liquefaction tendencies and can risk stability to ship and safety of crew.
There are solid bulk cargoes that are commonly transported by bulk carriers and yet many members are not familiar with the dangers that are associated with them. BIMCO provides timely information and advice on cargoes like iron ore fines, bauxite as well as cargoes that are capable of causing oxygen depletion in cargo spaces and adjacent spaces.
BIMCO providing guidance on the corrosivity test that is applied to solid bulk cargoes under the International Maritime Solid Bulk Cargoes ( IMSBC) Code. This is for testing of solid bulk cargoes as corrosive solids under the hazard classification of materials that are hazardous when transported in bulk (MHB).
Some advice in respect of the new wood pellet entries in the IMSBC Code, Amendment 03-15 (2016 Edition) based on a recent enquiry from a member.
A Group A and B cargo is one which may liquefy/dynamically separate ( Group A) and possess chemical hazards ( Group B). Note : Group A cargoes are cargoes which possess a hazard due to moisture that may result in liquefaction or dynamic separation if shipped at a moisture content in excess of their transportable moisture limit. Group B cargoes are cargoes which possess a chemical hazard that could give rise to a dangerous situation on a ship
Check out the latest list issued by the International Maritime Organization (IMO ) of solid bulk cargoes that are exempted from CO 2 fittings.
Bauxite cargoes are problematic cargoes capable of experiencing severe liquefaction which unknown at that time, was actually dynamic separation, a phenomenon discovered based on the outcome of the work of the Global Bauxite Working Group. These cargoes will experience dynamic separation, if they are not carried in accordance with the requirements of the International Maritime Solid Bulk Cargoes ( IMSBC) Code. Providing the relevant guidance here to guide members accordingly.
BIMCO attended a very useful webinar on understanding liquefaction risks associated with the carriage of Group A cargoes in the International Maritime Solid Bulk Cargoes (IMSBC) Code. Members are encouraged to view this webinar for a better understanding of the problems that can occur with Group A cargoes.
BIMCO providing information and guidance in relation to the revision of this cargo information and declaration form for the International Maritime Solid Bulk Cargoes ( IMSBC) Code. The revised form is also available for easy downloading here.
