The activity was limited in the newbuilding realm. It seems that the Christmas period lull has affected contracting activity as only two orders came to light during the past days. The newbuilding market activity was in line with the course that we have been witnessing since the start of the year. Crude carrier units were missing for another week while LNG and container deals were present as always despite the increasing newbuilding prices.

After just one week break, activity in the new building market has resumed with a plethora of contracts appearing on the market. The majority of deals concern container units while despite the fact that no fresh tanker deals came to light during the past week, interest in the clean tanker sector was vivid in the secondhand realm. The newbuilding market activity was in line with the course that we have been witnessing since the start of the year. BIMCO nominates President Designate to succeed Sabrina Chao in 2021

Under the presidency of Mrs Sadan Kaptanoglu, the BIMCO Board of Directors has approved the nomination of Mr Nikolaus H. Schües, CEO of Reederei F. Laeisz (Germany) to stand for election as the next President Designate of BIMCO in 2021, succeeding Mrs Sabrina Chao, Chairman of Wah Kwong Shipping Holdings Limited (Hong Kong).

ISM Clause 1998

BIMCO listened carefully to the concerns expressed by many sectors of the industry regarding the likely effect on commerce of the coming into force of the ISM Code. The ISM Code represents only one part of the substantial volume of regulations to which shipowners are bound under the law of the Flag State. As part of the SOLAS Convention 1974, as amended, implementation of the ISM Code is mandatory for all Contracting States under international law. Most standard charterparties contain fairly all-embracing provisions requiring the owner to ensure that the vessel is in full compliance with all relevant international rules and regulations, and possesses the necessary certificates, to permit the vessel to trade within the agreed trading limits. Therefore, from a strictly legal point of view, BIMCO considers that there is no readily identifiable contractual need to make a specific reference to the ISM Code in a voyage or time charter. Nevertheless, in response to the demand of Members and for those who may feel more comfortable incorporating a specific reference to the ISM Code in their charterparties, BIMCO has devised a broad and neutrally worded ISM Clause.
