Efforts to reduce piracy in Gulf of Guinea have so far had little effect. The world’s biggest economies are strengthening their military presence in Southeast Asia, and meanwhile, the security situation in the Red Sea off Yemen remain volatile. On 9 October BIMCO will shed light on the international security situation to raise awareness and stimulate discussions.
At the IMO’s 101st meeting of the Maritime Safety Committee, BIMCO’s Head of Maritime Security – Jakob P. Larsen – spoke in a direct fashion about the serious situation posed by piracy in the Gulf of Guinea, and especially off the coast of Nigeria.
Since Q1 2013, the significance of US coal exports has seen a considerable setback, with 2016 achieving the same levels as 2009. This is due to the long-haul routes carrying coking coal from the US East Coast and US Gulf Coast to East Asia not operating to the same extent and the EU is demanding less thermal coal.
