Shipping gears up to meet 5-10% low carbon fuel target, but will fuels be available?

20 December 2023

The International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) targets for the use of zero or near-zero fuels in 2030 can be met using sustainable biofuels. Many different sectors will compete for those fuels, so shipping is focusing on transitioning to alternative green and blue fuels. Today, only 1% of bulk, container, and tanker ships are prepared for using these fuels and fuel availability is low.

Decarbonisation Seminar

29 April 2024

The complexities of maritime decarbonisation are underscored by the industry's multifaceted challenges in reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The European Union (EU) and the International Maritime Organization (IMO) have implemented new rules to address this imperative. The EU and the IMO have set ambitious emission reduction targets for the shipping sector, encouraging the adoption of alternative fuels and energy-efficient technologies. Simultaneously, the IMO’s strategy for reducing GHG Emissions from ships outlines a phased approach towards decarbonisation. These regulations necessitate significant technological and operational changes for shipowners, charterers, and operators. Achieving compliance involves navigating intricate compliance frameworks, especially considering the diverse nature of vessels and trades.

Where do we go from here? A roadmap for HKC implementation

07 December 2023

Following Pakistan's recent accession to the Hong Kong International Convention for the Safe and Environmentally Sound Recycling of Ships (HKC), all major ship recycling states, including Türkiye, India, Bangladesh, and Pakistan, have become parties to the IMO's HKC.

BIMCO submits biofouling survey results to the IMO

03 December 2019

BIMCO has forwarded the results of a biofouling survey to the International Maritime Organization (IMO) to contribute with insight into biofouling practices ahead of the IMO’s revision of the existing guidelines for ships’ biofouling.

Record high ship deliveries boost container fleet capacity by 4.3%

10 August 2023

Deliveries of new container ships during the first seven months of the year reached a new record high of 1.2 million TEU in 2023, beating the previous record by 0.2 million TEU. As recycling of ships has remained low, the fleet capacity has grown 4.3% since January.

ETS – Emission Scheme Transfer of Allowances Clause for Voyage Charter Parties 2023

23 April 2024

This clause is one from a suite of three clauses developed by the subcommittee for the voyage charter party context. The objective was to provide industry stakeholders with the flexibility to choose a procedure suitable for their specific trade and business. You should consider whether this Emission Scheme Transfer of Allowances Clause for Voyage Charter Parties 2023 is the one best suited to your specific circumstances or whether the ETS - Emission Scheme Freight Clause for Voyage Charter Parties 2023 or ETS - Emission Scheme Surcharge Clause for Voyage Charter Parties 2023 would be more appropriate. As the title suggests, this ETS – Emission Scheme Transfer of Allowances Clause for Voyage Charter Parties 2023 deals with the transfer of emission allowances. The basis of the clause is that the voyage charterer will be the one transferring emission allowances to the owners for the voyage. The owners, as a matter of contract, then remain responsible for surrendering the appropriate number of emission allowances in accordance with the applicable Emission Scheme.
