BIMCO adopts new CII clause for Voyage Charter Parties

The shipping industry is facing an increase in new regulations from the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and the European Union (EU) and an increase in the urgency to decarbonise. To support the industry, BIMCO has developed a new CII Clause for Voyage Charter Parties. The clause was adopted by BIMCO’s Documentary Committee on 11 October and is the latest addition to BIMCO’s portfolio of carbon clauses.

Many industries, including shipping, are facing an increasing environmental pressure to act upon the Paris Agreement. In April last year, the IMO’s Marine Environmental Protection Committee (MEPC) set out their initial strategy, which envisages the reduction of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by at least 50% by 2050 compared to 2008 levels. The ambition also is to reduce CO2 emissions (which account for about 82% of all GHG emissions) by at least 40% by 2030, pursuing efforts towards 70% by 2050 from the 2008 baseline. Liner supply falls as operators reduce average sailing speed by 4%

During the COVID-19 pandemic, liner operators increased the average sailing speed by up to 4% due to strong demand and widespread port congestion. Today, the situation is very different and in the first quarter of 2023 the average sailing speed has slowed to 13.8 knots, down 4% y/y, and could drop by 10% before 2025.
