Helen is a senior solicitor at NorthStandard. Helen has been with the Club since 2012 working in the FD&D team and is now in External Affairs. Helen has been heavily involved in the NorthStandard’s decarbonisation work, advising Members on the international regulations, such as the EEXI and CII regulations, aimed at getting shipping to meet the IMO’s greenhouse gas strategy, as well as regional decarbonisation legislation, such as the EU Emission Trading System and FuelEU Maritime. Helen advises Members on the interplay between the regulations and the charterparty context and, therefore, assists with drafting clauses for charter parties and ship management agreements to address these issues. In her External Affairs role, Helen engages with various industry bodies, as well as government, on issues affecting shipping including maritime decarbonisation and geopolitics/sanctions.

We have set up a subcommittee to further support decarbonisation efforts. Recognising the crucial role of reliable data and energy efficiency, we are drafting two clauses: a Data Sharing and Energy Efficiency Performance Clause and a Retrofit Cost/Benefit Clause.

As the maritime sector moves towards a greener and more sustainable future, BIMCO remains at the forefront of this transformation addressing the issue of alternative fuels. BIMCO is developing robust contractual tools for the industry by establishing two new subcommittees to commence work on clauses to address the introduction of the FuelEU Maritime Regulation, use of biofuels, dual fuel and to produce new Methanol Bunker Terms.
