The Hebei Maritime Safety Administration (MSA) in China has recently released a case where the local regulator fined a ship that burned high sulphur content fuel.
BIMCO argues for clear regulations for when and where the samples for fuel in use are taken. The current proposal for sulphur content sampling of fuel on ships would require extensive fitting of new sampling points.
The International Maritime Organization (IMO) Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC 72) will meet next week, where a prohibition on the carriage of non-compliant fuel oil with a sulphur content exceeding 0.50% is on the agenda.
