Bad bunker risk will rise in 2020: Bunker states must take action

Recent reports of a rise in fuel contamination cases have increased the industry’s concerns over quality and safety of blended fuels as 2020 approaches. And for a good reason. A spike in demand for new low sulphur blends from 1 January 2020 will greatly increase the risk of contamination. Lars Robert Pedersen, Deputy Secretary General of BIMCO calls for bunker states to take responsibility.

The mediation provision found in earlier versions of this clause has been removed and made into a free standing clause that parties can incorporate by choice. Container shipping emerges triumphant from a disrupted 2020

In the full year of 2020, global container shipping volumes fell by 1.2% compared with 2019, much less than feared even before the pandemic was first declared, and much recovered compared with the 6.8% drop recorded in the first six months of the year.

2020 Marine Fuel Sulphur Content Clause for Time Charter Parties

BIMCO has produced two clauses for time charter parties to address key contractual issues relating to the switch to fuel with a maximum sulphur content of 0.50% as of 1 January 2020. The two clauses are the 2020 Marine Fuel Sulphur Content Clause, which replaces the BIMCO Fuel Sulphur Content Clause 2005, and the 2020 Fuel Transition Clause, which deals with switching between fuel with a maximum sulphur content of 3.50% and fuel with a maximum sulphur content of 0.50% by 1 January 2020. Both clauses should be incorporated into time charter parties. This clause was published on 10 December 2018.

ISO issue letter of conformity ahead of 2020 sulphur cap

The 2020 0.50% sulphur limit for fuel oil used outside emission control areas will undoubtedly create operational issues for crews onboard ships. The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) has now issued a letter in this regard rebutting these claims.
