The entrance to the river is protected by two 1,500 m long breakwaters. The off-lying bar has a depth of 13 m (43'), the entrance channel is dredged to 12.5 m (41') over a min. width of 100 m for 2,000 m, thence to 10 m (33') to the Recinto Fiscal Berth, thence for 6.5 miles upstream to Nanchital are depths for vessels drawing up to 5.2 m (17') and the following 14 miles to Minatitlan have a min. depth of 5.2 m (17').
