Wood pulp or Pulp wood - two different cargoes

Published: 07 December 2021

BIMCO has received some enquiries relating to two cargoes:  wood pulp and pulp wood. Are they different, or the same? And are fixed CO2 fittings on ships required to carry these cargoes?

Wood pulp and pulp wood are not only two different cargoes but are of different types: general cargo and solid bulk cargo respectively.

Pulp wood is considered a cargo that is non-combustible or has a low fire risk and as such, is exempted from having CO2 fittings as per MSC.1/Circ.1395/rev.4 where pulp wood is listed therein.

As for wood pulp carried in bales, whether they should be carried on ships with or without CO2 fittings depends on the information and requirements provided by the shipper.
