Professor George Leloudas is a Professor at the Institute of International Shipping and Trade Law (IISTL) of Swansea University that he joined in 2011. He is a graduate of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. He holds LLM degrees from the University of Bristol (England, 2002) and McGill University (Montreal, Canada, 2003). He also completed his PhD degree at Trinity Hall, Cambridge University in 2009 and worked in practice as a solicitor in London prior to joining to the IISTL. George has published extensively in the fields of insurance and carriage of passengers/cargo and his research interests extend to multimodal transport and the regulation of autonomous transport systems. He teaches marine insurance law, carriage of goods by sea, land and air and arbitration law. He has published two monographs, the most recent one with Professor Malcolm Clarke of Cambridge University on cargo Insurance. He is also the General Editor of the preeminent publication, Shawcross and Beaumont on Air Law and his new book on the Montreal Convention 1999 is expected to be published at the end of 2023.
The BIMCO Documentary Committee (DC) convened on 22 March 2024 in Hamburg, under the chairmanship of Nick Fell. The meeting marked a significant step forward in BIMCO's documentary work, with the adoption of key projects and the review of ongoing developments of contracts and clauses.
In an effort to keep seafarer training, certification and watchkeeping aspects in line with developments in the shipping industry, and to address several challenges faced by seafarers, the Maritime Safety Committee (MSC) of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) has agreed to start a comprehensive review and revision of the STCW Convention and Code. The work is expected to begin at the HTW sub-committee next year.

Nick Fell of BW Group was officially elected Chairman of the Documentary Committee at BIMCO’s General Meeting on 20 May last year. When Fell took over, the industry was in many ways still confronted with the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic while, at the same time, the need for contractual solutions in key areas such as environmental compliance was growing. Below, Fell answers seven questions about his and the Committees work.
