IMO to further develop IGF code

Overview

BIMCO attended the 5th session of the International Maritime Organization (IMO)’s Sub-Committee on Carriage of Cargoes and Containers (CCC 5) to further develop the International Code of Safety for Ships using Gases or other Low-flashpoint Fuels.

The Code – the IGF Code - aims to minimize the risk to ships, their crews and the environment, given the nature of the fuels involved and the working group met to continue developing the guidance and draft amendments. The work included the scope and title of the interim guidelines which should be limited to methyl/ethyl alcohol fuels with some additives and impurities, which the title should reflect.

Therefore, the definition of "fuel" for the purpose of these guidelines was modified. The working group also agreed that terminologies used in the draft text were already defined in mandatory instruments including SOLAS chapter II-2 and IGF Code, so the draft amendments and guidance were modified to reflect the mandatory definitions.

Finally, the Sub-Committee agreed to ask the upcoming Maritime Safety Committee (MSC) 100 meeting, to consider the working group’s proposal for referring technical and safety issues, as well as to ask other relevant IMO Sub-Committees for their input.

A correspondence group has been established to carry on with the work until the next CCC 5 meeting.

VPS Bunker Alerts

Veritas Petroleum Services (VPS) publish regular Bunker Alerts based entirely on fuel samples and have kindly permitted BIMCO’s Members to access this information.

The Bunker Alerts are not intended to be an evaluation of overall bunker quality in the port or area concerned, but usually highlight a specific parameter within the fuel which has raised a quality issue.
