Early in 2024 Adrian Tolson published a White Paper arguing for the global adoption of calibrated mass flow meters (MFMs) in the bunkering industry. He argued that this progress will bring much-needed transparency to bunkering by generating accurate, real-time data for all stakeholders along the marine fuel supply chain. Describing the problems for the industry caused by inaccurate quantity measurement he sets out a number of remedial actions. The paper recognizes the success of Singapore’s MFM based bunker licensing system and proposes this as a template for regulators in other regions across the world. It calls on all supply chain participants to actively support MFM-based deliveries, promote transparency and encourage digitalization in the long-term interests of the bunker industry and to help further the decarbonization goals of the shipping industry. This 15+15 will explore these ideas and assess if there is a chance for real progress.

A new virus "Novel Coronavirus (2019-nCoV)" has been detected, causing serious outbreaks in China, Japan and Republic of Korea. WHO issues advice for international travel and trade.
19 March 2020
The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared the outbreak of the novel coronavirus a pandemic. There is little doubt that this will have significant implications for the shipping industry. But to what extent?

BIMCO’s President Anastasios Papagiannopoulos will moderate the “Smart Shipping” panel discussion, scheduled for 10 October at 11:45. The panel will discuss novel ship design, cyber security and digitalisation – all key issues with a specific bearing on the future.

The outbreak of the novel Coronavirus has dented market sentiment and spooked markets around the globe. When China sneezes, we all catch the flu. This especially holds true for the commercial shipping markets, which remain heavily reliant upon China, both on the import and export side.

Carbon capture and storage (CCS) is not a novel concept. Many of the early facilities were developed to be a direct source capture from power generation or gas processing plants with CO2 storage sites nearby (with first operations dating back to 1972!). The weekly tanker market report by Gibson Shipbrokers - features an overview of the crude oil and oil product tanker market.

The Danish Government is taking new measures against Covid-19. Until 27 March, all public servants in non-critical jobs have been sent home, all educational institutions, schools and day care facilities are closed, and indoor gatherings have been limited to 100 people. Furthermore, the government has urged all private companies to have as many people as possible working from home, among other things, to slow down the spread of the virus.

The outbreak from time to time of virulent diseases can have significant implications for ship owners and operators. This might include quarantine of a vessel and crew in an area where the disease is prevalent as well as the imposition of restrictions, possibly weeks or months later, in ports remote from the infected region as a precaution against the disease spreading further. The Novel Corona virus is the latest outbreak of a series of contagious disease that may impact shipping operations. In 2015 it was the Ebola virus and 10 years before that the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) that caused similar concern. It is likely that equally serious strains of existing, or newly identified, diseases will occur from time to time. For this reason BIMCO has chosen to develop a set of comprehensive and clearly worded generic clauses for voyage and time charter parties that can be applied not only to the Novel Corona virus outbreak but to other similar virulent diseases that may occur in the future.
