Last week, the overall activity in the shipbuilding sector was healthy, with multiple deals taking place and the tanker sector having the lion’s share.
Activity in the new building market was healthy last week with a couple of orders being materializing just before the close of the 2022 contracting book.
Newbuilding activity momentum remained unchanged, with owners interest continued to focus mainly on the container and LNG sectors.
Newbuilding ordering activity has been quiet during the first week of August, with a total number of four orders, all placed at Chinese shipyards. On the container front, CMA-CGM’s order of 6x15,000teu units has monopolized interest, as it is the second container operator, after AP Moller-Maersk, that has opted for methanol-powered vessels over LNG.
The shipbuilding activity bounced back last week. A plethora of newbuilding orders were placed with emphasis on container vessels, followed by LNG carriers.
Τhe LNG newbuilding activity remained strong last week, with a massive newbuilding deal signed by the Chinese CNOOC, while interest for the rest of the sectors remained limited.
The newbuilding market activity saw a decreased number of materialized deals last week, as only three orders came to light. More specifically, Swedes owner Erik Thun has ordered another LNG/LBG 17,999 chemical tanker at Jinling shipyard followed its partner Furetank similar order in late January.
Last week, the newbuilding contracting activity saw a huge volume of Container units across all type of sizes. The exceptionally positive conditions in the boxship sector, continue to strengthen owners’ interest after their historical profits during 2021.
