The attacks on merchant ships in the Gulf of Guinea by Nigerian pirates must end. So far, 99 maritime companies, organisations and flag states, including BIMCO, have signed the Gulf of Guinea Declaration on Suppression of Piracy, which was launched today.

Support for eradicating piracy in the Gulf of Guinea is gaining strength both in Asia and world-wide. Organisations including Japan’s NYK Line and the Asian Shipowners’ Association are among the latest to join in the call for action.

A new Internationally Releasable Threat Assessments (IRTA) has been issued by Combined Maritime Forces (CMF) and EU Naval Forces. It is the assessment that the threat from Somali pirates and from terrorists is “benign” i.e. lower than low. However, there are threats related to the ongoing conflict between in Yemen between the Saudi-Led coalition and the Houthi rebel group. These threats are perceived as low for general shipping, but moderate to substantial to ships involved in the conflict in Yemen or engaged in oil activities near Yemeni ports.
In response to growing concerns and increasing attacks in the region, a taskforce of stakeholders from across the shipping industry drafted the Gulf of Guinea Declaration on Suppression of Piracy.
On 31 May, the United Nations Security Council unanimously adopted a text which condemned that pirate networks are jeopardising the safety and security of seafarers and restricting the flow of commerce in the Gulf of Guinea.
Houthi attacks on ships in the Red Sea, coupled with a rise in piracy off the coast of Somalia, are disrupting global trade. In 2023 an estimated 13% of global seaborne trade transited through these areas. However, the attacks have reduced the number of ships transiting the area by 50%.
