Many industries, including shipping, are facing an increasing environmental pressure to act upon the Paris Agreement. In April last year, the IMO’s Marine Environmental Protection Committee (MEPC) set out their initial strategy, which envisages the reduction of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by at least 50% by 2050 compared to 2008 levels. The ambition also is to reduce CO2 emissions (which account for about 82% of all GHG emissions) by at least 40% by 2030, pursuing efforts towards 70% by 2050 from the 2008 baseline. 13 May 2024, 13:00 – 16:30 The complexities of maritime decarbonisation are underscored by the industry's multifaceted challenges in reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The European Union (EU) and the International Maritime Organization (IMO) have implemented new rules to address this imperative. The EU and the IMO have set ambitious emission reduction targets for the shipping sector, encouraging the adoption of alternative fuels and energy-efficient technologies. Simultaneously, the IMO’s strategy for reducing GHG Emissions from ships outlines a phased approach towards decarbonisation. These regulations necessitate significant technological and operational changes for shipowners, charterers, and operators. Achieving compliance involves navigating intricate compliance frameworks, especially considering the diverse nature of vessels and trades.
The Chairpersons of the Round Table of international shipping associations (RT) met in Rome in February to exchange their members’ experiences with the implementation of IMO’s 2020 global sulphur regulations.
The BIMCO Documentary Committee (DC) will be meeting on 11 October. The agenda includes six projects up for adoption: CII Clause for Voyage Charter Parties, Ship Sales Further Trading Clause, ETS Allowances (ETS) Clause for SHIPMAN, Quiet Enjoyment Letters, SYNACOMEX and WRECKSTAGE.
Shipmanagers and owners, assisted by legal and insurance experts, are grappling with the complexities of drafting a clause for SHIPMAN that sets out the responsibilities for administering and surrendering emissions allowances under an Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS). Although the clause is being written to work with any ETS, the primary focus is on the EU ETS, which is the world’s largest carbon trading scheme, soon to embrace shipping.
