Iron Smelting by-products


A by-product from the smelting of iron ore, ilmenite and titanomagnetite. Black or grey and varies in size; from small to large size lumps (up to 45 tonnes) including granulated iron. Depending on the size and manufacturing of these cargoes, it can be called by various names - see section on " trade names". Bulk density (kg/m3): varies.


Non-IMSBC Code information: this cargo is made during the production of steelworks; during the desulphurisation process and/or during the steel production; and/or during processing of crude steel/ finishing. Uses: for making steel in electric furnaces.

Trade Names (Synonyms)
Various names as appearing in the IMSBC Code for "iron smelting by-products" schedule: Iron pan edges, K1-K3 bears, Separation of iron, Steel bears, Granulated iron, Pig iron by-product, Plate iron, Beach iron, Pool iron, Iron Skulls, Flat iron.
