Ammonium nitrate based fertilizer

Description

Mandatory application of this schedule:
1.
This Group C schedule applies only to ammonium nitrate based fertilizers that do not meet any of the criteria on dangerous goods or materials hazardous only in bulk ( MHB) specified in 9.2.2 or 9.2.3 of the IMSBC Code respectively.

2. This Group C schedule covers straight nitrogen based fertilizers and compound NPK/NK/NP fertilizers with the following applicable composition limits;

Straight nitrogen fertilizers

  • containing less than 2% chloride, and
  • not more than 70% ammonium nitrate (AN) with other inorganic materials; or
  • not more than 80% AN mixed with calcium carbonate and/or dolomite and/or mineral calcium sulphate and not more than 0.4% total combustible organic material calculated as carbon; or
  • mixtures of AN and ammonium sulphate with not more than 45% AN and not more than 0.4% total combustible organic material calculated as carbon.

(BIMCO's explanatory note: Straight nitrogen fertilizers must contain less than 2% ( <2%) chloride AND combined with varying options of AN mixtures as follows:

  • not more than 70% ( ≤ 70% ) AN with organic materials; OR
  • not more than 80% ( ≤80%) AN mixed with calcium carbonate AND/OR dolomite AND/OR mineral calcium sulphate AND not more than 0.4% (≤ 0.4%) total combustible organic material calculated as carbon; OR
  • mixtures of AN and ammonium sulphate with not more than 45% (≤ 45%) AN and not more than 0.4% total (≤ 0.4%) combustible organic material calculated as carbon.)

Compound NPK/NK/NP Fertilizers

  • mixtures of nitrogen with phosphate and/or potash containing not more than 70% AN and not more than 0.4% total combustible organic material calculated as carbon or
  • not more than 45% AN and unrestricted combustible material; and
  • either less than 20% of AN content or less than 2% of chloride.

(BIMCO's explanatory note: Compound NPK/NK/NP fertilizers has a clear defining limit for the presence of AN; it must contain not more than 70% (≤ 70%) AN in mixtures of nitrogen with phosphate and/or potash and not more than 0.4% (≤ 0.4%) total combustible organic material calculated as carbon OR AN not more than 45 %  (≥ 45%) and unrestricted combustible material AND in both cases, AN must be less than 20% ( < 20%) OR less than 2% (<2%) chloride.

3. Shipper's Declaration - the shipper shall declare the AN content and the chloride content in accordance with 4.2 of the IMSBC Code.

4. Important note : the provisions of this schedule would not apply to fertilizers with the above composition limits that have been assigned class 9 due to the hazard of self-sustaining decomposition based on the results of the trough test (referred to in the UN Manual of Tests and Criteria part III, section 39.

    Description
    These fertilizers are non-cohesive when dry. In form of crystals, granules or prills.  Wholly or partly soluble in water. Bulk density: 1,000 to 1,200 kg/m3. Common products, listed (non-exhaustive) under this schedule are:

    .1 calcium ammonium nitrate;
    .2 ammonium sulphate nitrate;
    .3 ammonium nitrate with other sulphates (e.g. calcium or magnesium sulphate); and
    .4 compound NPK/NP/NK fertilizer.

Trade Names (Synonyms)
calcium ammonium nitrate, ammonium sulphate nitrate, ammonium nitrate with other sulphates, compound NPK/NP/NK
