First global standard for ship hull cleaning essential for marine ecosystems

BIMCO, the world’s largest shipping association, has moved a step closer to finishing a global set of guidelines needed to protect the marine environment from invasive species and reduce CO2 emissions. Currently, there is no common global standard for cleaning ships’ hulls to avoid transferring invasive aquatic species, nor for the potentially damaging debris washed off in the process.

New Wreck Removal Agreement provides optional risk allocation procedure

The introduction of QRA (Quantitative Risk Analysis) into the contracting process for maritime wreck removal operations has prompted a revision of WRECKSTAGE. QRA is used to assess risk in the operation of an engineering process to inform and guide decisions on the allocation of risk between the contracting parties and the consequent pricing ramifications.

Use of the “Crew change and deviation clause” far outweighs the “no crew change” clause. BIMCO’s regional manager in Asia, Wayne Zhuang, examines some of the challenges surrounding crew change during the pandemic and as the war in Ukraine adds new challenges to existing problems for owners, managers, and our seafarers.
