Programme and links

BIMCO's charter party workshop (dry and tanker) comprises lectures combined with group discussions and case studies, and are highly practical in scope.

At the end of the workshop, participants may take an "open book" test to assess their level of understanding of the subject matter. This assessment, which leads to the award of a BIMCO certificate, will be of value to employers and employees in demonstrating the effectiveness of the training and knowledge attained. Participants can choose from either dry and tanker assessments, depending on the nature of their business and interest.

The lectures cover the following key topics.

Voyage chartering

  • the shipowners’ duties
  • the charterers’ duties
  • laytime and demurrage

Time chartering

  • time charter duration and re-delivery
  • payment of hire
  • off-hire clauses
  • employment orders
  • time charter cargo operations

Common issues

  • what is a safe port?
  • when is a port to be safe?
  • what is the extent of the charterers’ duty?
