With ratification of the BBNJ agreement now standing only nine ratifications short of entry-into-force, attention is turning to what this will mean for international shipping and measures to protect areas of the high seas with significant biodiversity.
This consultation event will introduce MarViva and the Thermal Dome Project to the international shipping industry and present draft findings from a recent socio-ecosystem diagnostic analysis. This will enable informed discussion of the project’s findings and open debate on the applicability, effectiveness, and benefits of existing good practice, such as speed reductions and seasonal routing, already widely employed by the international shipping industry towards protecting biodiversity. This will lead to further discussion around the impact of potential future measures in the context of the BBNJ (Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction) Agreement.
