The presentation will provide an overview of the main categories of biofuels, potential operational challenges and how operators best prepare themselves before venturing into the area of biofuels.
Shipping is exploring many pathways towards decarbonisation. When it comes to choice of marine fuel, biofuel is the option for the short to medium term while being the only CAPEX free option. Due to an increasing demand for this type of marine fuel, the supply industry is exploring different biomasses and manufacturing processes. Although FAME and HVO are both well-known and standardised, other products such as biomass-to-liquid (e.g. Cashew NutShell Liquid) neither has clear specifications nor does the industry have much experience with the operational challenges such products may incur.
