The BIMCO Academy on Agency and Port Operations is an intensive, five-day, face-to-face programme designed for professionals who require a deeper understanding of port agency, operational execution, and the commercial frameworks governing international maritime trade.
The Academy positions the port agent as a modern, structured, and risk-aware professional, operating at the intersection of sale contracts, charterparties, documentation, and port operations. The programme goes beyond routine port activities and examines how contractual obligations, operational realities, and documentary practices converge during a port call.
Through a combination of expert-led sessions, practical case studies, and company visits, participants will develop a structured understanding of how decisions made at the port influence commercial outcomes, risk allocation, and exposure to disputes.
What will you learn?
By attending this Academy, you will:
- Understand how risk, cost, and control move across the sale contract, charterparty, and bill of lading
- Analyse how charterparty clauses translate into operational decisions at the port
- Gain practical insight into laytime, NOR, congestion, and evidentiary requirements
- Understand documentary risk, including bills of lading, LOIs, letters of credit, and e-bills
- Learn how agents become involved in claims, disputes, and regulatory matters
- Strengthen your ability to manage expectations, documentation, and communication under pressure

Analyse documentary risk, including clean bills, LOIs, letters of credit, and electronic documentation.
Day 4 – Infrastructure, Systems, and Operational Reality
Site visits to the Center for Simulators and Applied Technologies (CSTA) and a transit of the Panama Canal, providing first-hand insight into operational constraints and maritime infrastructure.
Day 5 – Claims, Disputes, and the Future Agent
Understand how incidents develop into claims and disputes, and how agents can act as professional risk managers and facilitators.
