Co-hosted by BIMCO and the International Organization for Mediation, this side event aims to provide a practical platform for industry exchange, regulatory discussion and cross-sector collaboration, while contributing to Hong Kong’s role as a leading hub for maritime legal and commercial innovation.
Supported by HKMPDB, the WEST P&I Club
Target audience: Shipowners, managers, legal professionals, insurers, brokers, shipyards, regulators, industry associations, etc
Workshop Background:
Hong Kong Maritime Week 2026 will take place from 15-21 November 2026, which marks the 10th anniversary of one of Asia’s most influential maritime industry platforms. Hong Kong continues to strengthen its position as an international maritime centre and a strategic gateway connecting global maritime stakeholders across Asia and beyond.
As the shipping industry is currently undergoing a profound transformation driven by decarbonisation objective and sustainability commitments, most shipping stakeholders are facing significant operational, commercial and contractual challenges. In parallel, the implementation of the Hong Kong International Convention for the Safe and Environmentally Sound Recycling of Ships (Hong Kong Convention) further highlights the industry’s commitment to sustainability, responsible recycling and lifecycle compliance.
As the world’s largest international shipping association, BIMCO has been actively developing and updating a series of industry-standard contracts and clauses to support the maritime sector’s transition towards greener and more sustainable operations. Considering the progress and market relevance of the ongoing project to modernise our standard contract for ship recycling, RECYCLECON, the development of a novel standard clause for the carriage of electric vehicles, as well as the development of a standard contractual solution for retrofitting projects to instal energy saving devices onboard ships, the Energy Saving Device Retrofitting Addendum, BIMCO believes HKMW 2026 presents an ideal opportunity to facilitate dialogue among shipowners, legal experts, regulators and wider maritime stakeholders.
