Biofuels Q&A
Charlotte Røjgaard, Global Marine Fuels Director at Bureau Veritas, speaks to BIMCO's Lars Robert Pedersen.
Biofuels are a promising element in the maritime energy transition, but their sustainability depends on robust certification and traceable biomass sourcing.
They are gaining traction as a practical interim solution in shipping’s path to decarbonisation. Many liquid and gaseous biofuels can replace fossil fuels directly, without technical modifications. When derived from sustainable biomass or biowaste, they can significantly reduce lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions.
As adoption increases, so does industry knowledge, from ship operators to engine manufacturers. Regulations and standards must evolve alongside this growing expertise, particularly as new biofuel categories emerge. Operational factors, such as proper storage and handling, are also crucial for their effective use on board.

Biofuel Clause for Time Charter Parties
This project aims to develop a standard clause for the use of biofuels under time charter parties. It will address key issues such as definitions, blending, sampling, storage, as well as owners’ and charterers’ responsibilities and liabilities. Operational elements like speed and consumption warranties, off-hire, and compliance with regulations such as FuelEU Maritime will also be covered.
The subcommittee, comprising owners, charterers, bunker suppliers and P&I clubs, held its first meeting in April 2025.
Expected publication date: 2025
As soon as the clause is adopted and published, we will annouce it in our newsletters.
