Whale Strike Mitigation Survey

Help shape whale protection by completing the BIMCO survey

BIMCO has launched a survey to address awareness of voluntary whale protection measures. The goal is to gather industry insights on experiences, challenges and solutions to whale-ship collisions and  engage our members in designing and building solutions that sit comfortably alongside practical issues related to daily operations.

About the survey

Whale species around the world are threatened by collisions with ships, which often lead to severe injuries or fatalities. Many mandatory and voluntary measure are in place which aim to reduce whale strikes in areas where they are most vulnerable.

We are launching a new survey to gather members’ views on both voluntary speed reduction zones and rerouting measures to protect whales. The survey also takes a deep dive into possible barriers to following voluntary guidance. At BIMCO we understand that voluntary measures can be challenging to align with operational realities. That is why your feedback is essential. By sharing your experiences, concerns and suggestions, you can help us advocate for strategies that are operationally feasible for the shipping industry whilst also being environmental impactful.

How to complete it

You can find the survey at Whale strike mitigation survey . We expect the survey to take between 10 and 20 minutes to complete depending on the amount of information you are happy to supply.
