Amendments to SOLAS will prohibit the use or carriage of fire-extinguishing media containing PFOS (perfluorooctane sulfonic acid) from 1 January 2026. The ban applies to both new and existing ships and represents the first global maritime regulation targeting PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl) substances.
Perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS) is a specific chemical within the broader family of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), a large group of synthetic compounds valued for their oil- and water-repellent properties but linked to environmental persistence and potential health risks. PFOS has been targeted for global phase-out under the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants due to its persistence, bioaccumulation, and toxicity. While the recent SOLAS amendments address only PFOS, future regulatory action may expand to cover a wider range of PFAS chemicals.
