Vacancy for Cargo Manager

Our regulatory affairs team is looking for a manager with core experience in safe carriage of cargoes. The team works to support BIMCO members by promoting transparent, non-discriminatory standards and harmonisation within the shipping industry, facilitating members’ compliance with international regulations and supporting them with practical guidance.

In this role, you will deliver technical and regulatory expertise on cargoes carried by ships, supporting BIMCO’s technical work, member services, and regulatory engagement at the International Maritime Organization (IMO). 

You will be expected to be our “go-to” person on MARPOL Annex II and the relevant IMO cargo codes, such as the IMDG Code, the IMSBC Code, the IGC Code, the IGF Code, and the IBC Code. The position will preferably be based in Belgium to also support our engagement with the EU while retaining easy access to London for IMO meetings.
 
If you are passionate about growing BIMCO’s internal knowledge, supporting the industry on all matters related to the carriage of cargoes, and engaging with members, maritime administrations, and internal teams across BIMCO’s global offices, then this could be the role for you.

 

  • Provide technical and regulatory expertise on cargoes carried by ships, including hazardous and non-hazardous substances, with particular focus on MARPOL Annex II and relevant IMO codes such as the IMDG Code, the IMSBC Code, the IGC Code, the IGF Code, and the IBC Code
  • Maintain oversight of the BIMCO cargo databases and support members by providing information related to cargo carriage, handling, and special requirements
  • Represent BIMCO at IMO meetings and other UN meetings related to the classification and carriage of cargoes at sea
  • Work with other international bodies
  • Facilitate and increase the number of BIMCO networks related to cargoes
  • Develop and maintain publications and guidance related to cargoes
  • Expect 10-30 travel days annually

You are someone who:

  • Is, or has been, a Master Mariner (Unlimited) or equivalent, possibly supplemented by relevant technical, business, and/or regulatory training
  • Has hands-on knowledge of handling dangerous cargoes
  • Knowledge of handling alternative fuels is an advantage
  • Is familiar with dry bulk and liquid cargoes and the applicable regulations and codes
    Is able to take complex cargo data and present it in an easy-to-understand operational context
  • Has strong communication, negotiation and interpersonal skills
  • Has excellent written and spoken English
