BIMCO to open London office

BIMCO will open its fourth local office, this time in London, at the beginning of 2021. The new office will support the organisation’s regulatory affairs activities with Dr Bev Mackenzie taking up the role of BIMCO’s permanent representative at the International Maritime Organization (IMO) from 1 February, reporting to Deputy Secretary General Lars Robert Pedersen at the head office in Copenhagen.

Shipping industry welcomes IMO decision to give further consideration to USD 5 billion fund to accelerate decarbonisation

Copenhagen, Brussels, London and Washington; November 20, 2020 – The UN International Maritime Organization (IMO) has given initial consideration to an innovative proposal from the global shipping industry to collectively provide USD 5 billion to accelerate R&D to support its decarbonisation.

Shipping industry urges Governments to take forward USD 5 billion proposal to accelerate the decarbonisation of maritime transport

Copenhagen/London/Washington, November 13, 2020 – As governments come together at the UN International Maritime Organization (IMO) to consider important next steps to decarbonise maritime transport, the global shipping industry urgently calls on them to take forward its proposal for an industry-financed, USD 5 billion research and development programme, to catalyse the transformation of the industry from dependence on fossil fuels to operating with zero-carbon energy sources.

IMEC and ITF opens big quarantine and testing facility in Manila

The International Maritime Employer’s Council (IMEC) and the International Transport Worker’s Federation (ITF) have set up quarantine and testing facilities in Manila to facilitate crew changes and address concerns about quarantine quality and fake COVID-19 tests.   

Important elements still missing after IMO working group meeting on GHG reductions

The Intersessional Working Group on reduction of greenhouse gas (GHG) from shipping had its first online meeting this week to advance the work on short term measures in support of the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) initial strategy on reduction of GHG from ships.

The addition of Hong Kong as the fourth named arbitration option has prompted BIMCO to overhaul its law and arbitration clause. The new edition was approved for publication at the recent meeting of BIMCO’s Documentary Committee and is available to download from our website.
