Underwater radiated noise

Overview

BIMCO's position on "underwater radiated noise" has been approved by the BIMCO Board of Directors.

Background

Underwater radiated noise and its impact on the marine environment are not yet covered by IMO regulations but guidelines on reducing underwater radiated noise from commercial shipping have been adopted (MSC.1/Circ.833).

There is grave concern about the adverse impact of underwater radiated noise.

BIMCO’s position

  • BIMCO will take the lead in formulating a common industry position on the facilitation of reducing underwater radiated noise from ships to ensure that any future targets are based on solid research on the impact on marine life.
  • BIMCO supports the IMO guidelines on the reduction of underwater radiated noise from commercial shipping.
  • BIMCO believes that mandatory requirements to minimise noise from ships should apply only to new ships and ships undergoing major conversions.
  • BIMCO supports a holistic view so as to ensure that any measures to reduce underwater radiated noise are balanced against potentially increased air emissions.
