Introduction: This session will provide an overview of the fundamental principles and key concepts in ship financing. Participants will gain a comprehensive understanding of the various financing options available, the roles of different stakeholders and the regulatory framework governing ship financing.  Current trends and challenges in ship financing will also be introduced.

  • Ship financing and fundamental principles: What is ship financing, why is it important and what are the fundamental principles of ship financing?
  • Overview of financing structures and instruments: Bilateral and syndicated bank loans, asset financing, leasing, sale and leaseback, bareboat charters, equity financing. 
  • Innovative financing solutions: Exploring new and creative ways to finance ships, such as crowdfunding and private equity.
  • The role of the main players: Shipowners, banks and financial institutions, investors and equity partners, maritime lawyers and brokers.
  • The applicable regulatory framework: International maritime law and national regulations.
  • Trends and challenges in ship financing: Market trends, technological advancements and the role of innovation, risk management strategies.

 

Day 2: Advanced Topics and Practical Applications in Ship Financing (90 minutes)

Introduction: Building on the foundational knowledge from the first day, this session will introduce participants to the comprehensive steps involved in a ship financing deal. Participants will get an overview of ship financing documentation and examine the critical role of documentation in securing and structuring financing deals, strategies for successful ship financing in a dynamic market and aspects relating to sustainable and green financing.

  • Navigating the process: A step-by-step introduction to a financing deal, challenges faced and matters to be particularly aware of.
  • Overview of documentation: The ship mortgage, assignments, charter party agreements, bill of sale, registration documents and insurance policies. Standards from the Loan Market Association and BIMCO.
  • Documentation as a Key Element: Ensuring proper registration of the ship, compliance with applicable laws, and managing documentation and accounting.
  • Strategies for successful ship financing: Due diligence to evaluate the risks associated with the financing deal, negotiating terms such as interest rates, repayment schedules and covenants, securing funding, and managing relationships.
  • Sustainable and green financing: Focus on environmental regulations and other CSR related aspects and their impact on ship financing, including the Poseidon Principles.
