Gudrun Janssens, BIMCO’s Regional & Regulatory Manager, will participate in a panel discussion addressing the upcoming entry into force of the Hong Kong Convention on 26 June 2025, a significant milestone toward a more sustainable ship recycling industry.
While this development marks important progress, the industry continues to face considerable legal uncertainty due to conflicts under the terms of the Basel Convention, the Hong Convention, and the European Ship Recycling Directive (which could be strengthened with a requirement for a financial contribution from vessels visiting EU ports).
The session will explore how the shipping industry can navigate this complex regulatory landscape. Key questions include: How should the industry navigate these legal uncertainties? Are the guidelines helping and are the yards going to survive if owners keep using older tonnage in good market conditions, or are the markets turning so older, less efficient vessels are being sent to the yards?
