The future of oil demand and subsequently of tanker demand is very much policy driven. It has been so in the past to some extent, but in coming years this will be more apparent.

The continued severity of the tanker market conditions has made owners dig deep into the oversupply of capacity. Still BIMCO expects the tanker fleet to keep growing. A short-term rate recovery is not expected, as it is ‘maintenance season’ for the global refining industry in September and October.

A fundamentally weak oil demand that is negatively affected by the high oil prices is hampering demand for both crude and product tanker tonnage. The weak demand is set to stay around according to IEA, which projects limited growth in 2011 of 1.5% against the 3.3% rebound growth in 2010.

One year ago the tanker orderbook stood at 132 million DWT – today it totals 118 million DWT. The total orderbook is down by 11% over the last year. Even though new contracts are being signed at a steady pace, that pace remains slower than that of newbuildings being delivered.

The fleet growth of 6.3% in the crude oil tanker market and the 4.8% growth in the oil product fleet will have its consequences on the supply and demand balance.
