Container spot rates now below USD 1,000 per TEU for Shanghai - Europe

Spot rates for shipping of containers out of Shanghai bound for Europe have now slipped below the USD 1,000 per TEU–mark for the first time since March 2009. Following yet another weekly drop in freight rates on this main trading lane, boxes are now being shipped off at USD 992 per TEU, USD 27 per TEU lower than last week.

Container spot rates turn a vital corner

For the first time in exactly half a year – container spot rates out of Shanghai have increased after falling for 25 consecutive weeks. On the last day of 2010 – Shanghai Shipping Exchanged disclosed rising spot rates for all destinations including the main trading lanes going to Europe and US West Coast. Following a 29% drop on average spot rates, the index rose 4% during the 52nd week of 2010.

COSCO chair receives BIMCO President’s award

Captain Xu Lirong, Chairman of COSCO Shipping, received the President’s Award at the BIMCO Conference in Shanghai for his excellent life-long service to the shipping industry. China Merchants Energy Shipping received the award for Best Shipping Company of Greater China Area 2019.

Container shipping lines earned 42 USD less per TEU in 2016

The container shipping lines received an average rate 7% (42 USD) lower in 2016 than in 2015, if they operated in the spot market on all Shanghai Containerized Freight Index (SCFI) trade routes. This has primarily been due to the devastating low rates received in the first half of 2016, as the average rate received in H2 2016 was 22% higher than the rate received in H2 2015.

BIMCO launches new Chinese name

BIMCO launched its Chinese name “滨客” at BIMCO's Conference and Awards Dinner in Shanghai in November, shortly after the launch of the new BIMCO brand.
