BIMCO to launch working group to harness members' experience of reducing single use plastics onboard ships

03 February 2022

Reducing the amount of plastic litter in the oceans is a shared responsibility and requires a collective effort. By taking steps to reduce single-use plastics on ships, the shipping industry will contribute to addressing the global plastic litter problem. We know that many BIMCO members are taking decisive and positive action in this area and we are keen to learn from their experiences to help shape a bigger industry campaign.

BIMCO calls for plan to minimize plastic waste entering the ocean

11 October 2018

BIMCO is calling for an action plan to ensure that adequate facilities for plastic waste disposal and processing for recycling are available ashore, as such facilities are a prerequisite for preventing plastic from entering the ocean when delivered to port reception facilities by the ships.

15+15 webinar: One billion bottles

11 May 2023

One billion bottles - What can and should the shipping industry do to play it’s part in addressing marine plastic litter? Ship-based sources of plastics to the ocean are largely unknown but its estimated that they are significantly lower than plastics from mismanagement on land. This is particularly valid for commercial ships where regulation is simple – discharge of all plastics into the sea from ships is prohibited. Nonetheless at BIMCO we believe that shipping should play its part in the marine plastics story –we have the potential to be leaders in this area- removing and reducing unnecessary plastics on board as well as advocating for change in how plastic waste is managed on land.

BIMCO marks World Oceans Day 2023 – “Planet Ocean: tides are changing”

07 June 2023

World Oceans Day was established by the United Nations to remind everyone of the major role the oceans have in everyday life. They are the lungs of our planet, a major source of food and medicine and a critical part of the biosphere- and of course vital to support world trade through shipping. The purpose of the day is also to inform the public of the impact of human actions on our oceans and to mobilise and unite the world’s population on a project for the sustainable management of the world's oceans. With this in mind, it is timely to remind people of the contribution of the shipping industry to addressing one of the greatest challenges facing the ocean: marine plastic litter.
