NATO's Maritime Command has released this threat assessment for the Mediterranean. It assesses the security risks to shipping in the Mediterranean as low, elaborating on topics such as migrants, drug smuggling, maritime terrorism and spillovers from the conflicts in Libya and Syria.

Towards the end of 2011, we got the first indication that liner companies were winning “the pricing battle” against shippers on the level of freight rates on the main lanes from Far East to Europe and the Mediterranean.
Hope for resumed activity in the oil tanker business is growing as the rebellion in Libya appears to be near a conclusion. Tanker shipping has been hurt by the lack of cargoes out of Libya for half a year now. Oil majors and oil service companies are right now getting back to Libya to assess the conditions of the facilities. It is hoped that the oil production can restart soon, opening up for renewed fixing of tankers to lift Libyan oil exports. Without Libyan oil exports, there is no hope for improvements in the tanker rates in the Mediterranean.
BIMCO has stated today that it appreciates the new efforts by EU leaders to reduce increasing reliance on merchant shipping to rescue the growing numbers of distressed migrants in the Mediterranean Sea.
