As European Union retail trade stagnates, the question for the Far East to Europe container trade will be whether consumers will buy less or cheaper.
2015 was a busy year for container traffic on the eastern coast of the US. 7.9 million TEU of loaded containers entered the US East Coast in 2015, a 12.6% increase - compared to 7 million in 2014.
Following five weak months of demand growth (January-May), transported container volumes are finally growing on the Far East to Europe trading lane – as much as 1.9% y-o-y in the first seven months of 2013.

After a period with short-term container freight rates reaching record highs on many of the major container shipping trades, long-term rates are now also experiencing a boost.
