New regulation from the International Maritime Organization (IMO), which will require existing ships to reduce carbon emissions, is due to enter into force in just under one year. As compliance will benefit to a large extent from co-operation between shipowners and charterers, BIMCO has developed a new clause to address the changes.
BIMCO participated in the second workshop at IMO for the preparation of the initial strategy on reduction of GHG emissions from ships last week in London.
The Blue Visby Solution is a much talked about optimisation concept for reducing emissions from groups of ships heading for the same port. It avoids the complications of conventional Just in Time Arrivals schemes by excluding the “last mile” and operating from pilot station to pilot station. And it differs from traditional Virtual Arrival by introducing a multilateral element to the contractual architecture.
The International Maritime Organization (IMO) recently approved regulatory changes that will require ships to improve their CO 2 emissions per transport work annually. In the best-case scenario, the new amendments may not be damaging to the industry’s efforts to reduce its carbon footprint. In the worst-case scenario, the ships’ CO2 emissions will rise, as more ships will be needed to obtain the required improvements.
The BIMCO Documentary Committee (DC) will be meeting on 11 October. The agenda includes six projects up for adoption: CII Clause for Voyage Charter Parties, Ship Sales Further Trading Clause, ETS Allowances (ETS) Clause for SHIPMAN, Quiet Enjoyment Letters, SYNACOMEX and WRECKSTAGE.
