ISO issue letter of conformity ahead of 2020 sulphur cap

18 July 2018

The 2020 0.50% sulphur limit for fuel oil used outside emission control areas will undoubtedly create operational issues for crews onboard ships. The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) has now issued a letter in this regard rebutting these claims.

Shipping industry comments on EP vote on regional CO2 measures

28 April 2015

Following today’s vote in the European Parliament, adopting a regional EU Regulation on the Monitoring, Reporting and Verification (MRV) of individual ship emissions of CO2, the International Chamber of Shipping (ICS), BIMCO and Intercargo have issued the following statement...

BIMCO demands 4th IMO GHG Study based on realistic economic growth

13 February 2019

BIMCO has proposed that the Fourth International Maritime Organization (IMO) Greenhouse Gas Study does not include unrealistically high gross domestic product (GDP) growth projections to predict future transport demand - and thereby emissions - of the shipping industry. The proposal has been made to the expert workshop preparing for the study, which is meeting in London 12-14 March.

Decarbonisation Seminar

14 March 2024

The complexities of maritime decarbonisation are underscored by the industry's multifaceted challenges in reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The European Union (EU) and the International Maritime Organization (IMO) have implemented new rules to address this imperative. The EU and the IMO have set ambitious emission reduction targets for the shipping sector, encouraging the adoption of alternative fuels and energy-efficient technologies. Simultaneously, the IMO’s strategy for reducing GHG Emissions from ships outlines a phased approach towards decarbonisation. These regulations necessitate significant technological and operational changes for shipowners, charterers, and operators. Achieving compliance involves navigating intricate compliance frameworks, especially considering the diverse nature of vessels and trades.

BIMCO aiming to complete CII and ETS Clauses for publication in May

28 April 2022

Work continues apace to prepare two important carbon clauses for publication in May. The most of challenging of these tasks is the development of a CII Compliance Clause for Time Charter Parties. Technical, commercial and legal experts have been meeting weekly for many months to try to find a practical solution for owners and operators operating under the new CII regime. As of 2023, ships will enter an annually narrowing emissions “corridor” where owners and charterers will need to work closely together to ensure continuing compliance. The BIMCO CII Clause will need to balance the operational restrictions imposed on owners by the low carbon regime against allowing charterers to optimise the ship’s commercial activity during the charter period.

IMO expects 77% drop in overall SOx emissions from ships

09 March 2020

The Chairpersons of the Round Table of international shipping associations (RT) met in Rome in February to exchange their members’ experiences with the implementation of IMO’s 2020 global sulphur regulations.
