Chris Garley

Chris joined HFW in 2008 and, after training for a period in Hong Kong, qualified into HFW’s London Shipping Litigation team in 2010, advising on both “wet” and “dry” disputes. His primary focus is on issues arising from marine casualties including collisions, fires and groundings. In recent years, Chris has been heavily involved in a number of high profile containership casualties arising from carriage of declared and undeclared dangerous goods. In doing so, he has acted for Owners and also for Charterers advising on all aspects of the casualty response including issues including of limitation of liability, jurisdiction, salvage and general average as well as the underlying liabilities, both in tort and related contracts of carriage/VSA/slot charter arrangements, including unseaworthiness and unsafe port claims. In 2016 Chris increased his “dry” experience by completing a secondment to the legal department of a major German power company based in the UK, advising the freight trading and chartering operations desks. During that period he advised on a range of issues from the initial chartering process, through to speed and performance claims, bill of lading disputes, sales contracts, letters of indemnity, and off-spec cargo claims. Christopher is qualified in England and Wales.

Jessica Maitra

Jessica is a Partner in Clyde & Co’s Marine and International Trade department. She has an international practice with an emphasis on shipping, trade and insurance work. Jessica is an experienced BIMCO trianer. At the BIMCO courses, she is drawing on her significant experiences advising clients on both commercial and contentious matters. From a disputes perspective she works on cases in the English Courts and in LMAA and other arbitrations. She also advises on contracts and transactions in the marine and insurance sectors. Jessica regularly advises on disputes and commercial aspects of shipping contracts, including charterparties, bills of lading, shipbuilding contracts and ship management agreements. Jessica has a wealth of experience in cases concerning liquid, gas and dry cargoes, but has particular experience of energy shipping and tanker contracts and claims. Her clients include shipowners, charterers, ship managers, oil majors and other energy companies, traders and their insurers/reinsurers. Jessica is listed by Legal 500 for shipping.

Mike Phillips

Mike is a partner and head of Stephenson Harwood’s marine and international trade practice. He specialises in shipping, carriage of goods, contentious ship finance disputes and ship and offshore vessel construction. Mike’s clients include banks, shipowners, traders and P&I clubs/insurers. Acting for some of the world’s largest and most well-known shipowners, he has experience of dealing with a wide range of matters from cargo claims and off-hire disputes to groundings and vessel fires. On the contentious ship finance side, Mike represents leading ship finance banks in a wide array of disputes arising from both pre and post-delivery finance.

Christopher specialises in all aspects of marine litigation and arbitration, commercial litigation and international trade disputes. He is renowned throughout South East Asia for his admiralty capability and his practice covers all aspects of shipping disputes to include collisions, salvage, charterparty disputes, bills of lading, cargo claims, tug and tow disputes, stevedore damage claims, personal injuries/fatal accident claims, insurance coverage issues and P&I insurance matters generally. Christopher is recommended as a key member of the Shipping team in the Asia-Pacific 2019 editions of Chambers and Legal 500. Jean Koh

Jean is a partner at HFW in London and specialises in shipping litigation, focusing on contractual shipping disputes including charter parties, bills of lading, cargo claims, commodities/trade disputes, ship sale and purchase disputes, bunker disputes and shipbuilding disputes. She represents owners, charterers, shipyards and their insurers based internationally but has a geographical focus on the Japanese market, having worked in Tokyo for 6 months there. On the casualty side, Jean also handles wet shipping disputes, in particular fire and explosions on container vessels due to undeclared dangerous cargoes and/or engine explosions, groundings on reef, unsafe port disputes, crane collapses, damage caused by sulphur cargo, liquefaction of cargo and general average incidents. Jean has worked at the HFW in Shanghai and Pireaus.
