Nigerian piracy: A thing of the past?

As 2023 draws to a close, it seems appropriate to take stock of the Nigerian piracy situation. In 2023 to date (14 December) three pirate attacks against seagoing ships have been recorded, and two of these attacks were successful. One of the successful attacks was related to cargo theft related, and one was related to kidnap for ransom.

Documentary Committee approves new SUPPLYTIME

The spring meeting of the Documentary Committee, chaired by Francis Sarre, was held in Rome on 6 June. The sixty-strong committee discussed an extensive and diverse range of documentary projects and approved for publication three new contracts and one clause.

He has broad experience with maritime liens, ship arrests, maritime attachment and garnishment remedies, transport and sale of goods contracts, cargo claims, shipping casualties, and marine pollution. For energy companies, Chris has experience with upstream and midstream commercial disputes and casualties, offshore and onshore, and with eminent domain condemnation cases for pipelines, including disputes arising from joint operating agreements, gas processing and gas measurement, mineral leases, and various conveyances of royalties and oil and gas interests. Chris has been a speaker for BIMCO and author for presentations and articles on topics including offshore drilling, coastwise trade laws, OSV charter parties, and many maritime law issues. Chris is admitted to practice in Texas, in the US District Courts for the Southern, Eastern, and Western Districts of Texas, in the US Courts of Appeal for the Fifth and Tenth Circuits, and in the US Supreme Court. Before practicing law, Chris sailed as a professional mariner.

Elizabeth is a partner at the Hong Kong office of Stephenson Harwood, specialising in complex, multi-jurisdictional litigation and arbitration. She has extensive experience in a range of commercial disputes, including cross-border fraud, corporate insolvency, and marine litigation and arbitration. Elizabeth has advised clients in a broad range of commercial disputes, and has acted for liquidators and other stakeholders in insolvencies. She has particular interest and experience in locating and securing the proceeds of fraud, obtaining injunctions and disclosure orders, and tracing assets. Elizabeth also practices in the maritime sector, with experience in arrest, judicial sale, jurisdictional challenges, limitation of liability, and shipping insolvencies. In addition, she assists clients to manage litigation in other jurisdictions. Elizabeth is admitted to practice as a solicitor in Australia, Hong Kong, and England and Wales. She joined Stephenson Harwood in 2016 from another international law firm. Elizabeth has been based in Hong Kong since 2008.
