A core benefit of the BIMCO Shipping-KPI system is the option to compare expense and performance at ship level. Presently, the system only allows for internal benchmarking but once a critical mass has been reached, the Shipping-KPI will facilitate external expense benchmarking
To unlock the cost categories, the following criteria must be met:
Cost categories are part of the following built-in company profiles:
If the company has any other built-in profile – e.g. (Built-in) Tankers or (Built-in) Bulk Carriers – or a KPI profile customised prior to the inclusion of Cost categories, the company KPI administrator may change the profile by going through the following steps:
Opening the Cost Categories in the company KPI Profile only allows for benchmarking. However, only users with the relevant permission can access, view or edit the cost values. If the KPI users are only designated Built-in roles, kindly notice that Cost categories are only accessible with the (Built-in) Costs role. The applied roles can be viewed by going to Users in the My Company-section. Roles can be changed by clicking on either the underlined name or email of the user.
To amend a Built-in or customised role, go through the following steps:
Also notice that amended Built-in roles would then have to be designated in the Users-subsection as described above, while adjusting an already customised role will have the adjustments applied without further action.
Once a relevant company KPI profile has been selected and users have been given the required permissions, all technicalities for submitting data on cost categories are in place. Similar to the performance indicators, the Shipping-KPI platform is suited for submitting historical data on cost categories. By submitting historical data, users are actively assisting in reaching the critical mass needed to allow for external benchmarking and giving a better foundation for internal benchmarking.

Veritas Petroleum Services (VPS) publish regular Bunker Alerts based entirely on fuel samples and have kindly permitted BIMCO’s Members to access this information.
The Bunker Alerts are not intended to be an evaluation of overall bunker quality in the port or area concerned, but usually highlight a specific parameter within the fuel which has raised a quality issue.
